Understanding Dementia Through Compassion
Dear Friends and Community Members,

My name is Vicki Seals, and I founded Dementia Guardian out of a deep love for my parents and the real challenges of caregiving.

My mother’s journey with Alzheimer's meant facing public moments where her behavior seemed confusing, annoying or frustrating to others. She might repeat herself or appear uncooperative, but she was simply trying to navigate a world that no longer felt familiar.

And one night, my father’s confusion at home nearly escalated into a dangerous encounter with police officers. He was trying to disarm the alarm in the dark, using a flashlight near a drawer that held a pistol. When the police arrived, their hands were resting cautiously on their weapons, ready to respond—rightfully so given the situation—but unaware of his condition. That terrifying experience showed me how easily dementia symptoms can be mistaken for threats.

These experiences showed me a painful truth: People living with dementia—and their caregivers—often face situations where a lack of awareness can lead to unnecessary risk, misunderstanding, and fear.

That’s why I created the Dementia Guardian symbol—a simple, universal sign to communicate that someone is living with dementia and may need extra patience, understanding, and a different kind of response.

When displayed on a reflective sign at the home, a pin, decal, tee, or bag, this symbol quietly tells first responders, neighbors, businesses, and strangers: Please respond with compassion and care.

But a symbol alone is not enough. We need your help to:

-
Learn the symbol—what it means, and why it matters.
-
Share it—with your networks, caregivers, local media, and community leaders.
-
Help us get it recognized—especially among caregivers, first responders, businesses, and service organizations.

Together, we can create safer, kinder communities where people living with dementia are respected and protected.

This initiative is about saving lives, fostering dignity, and building a compassionate community for everyone affected by dementia.

Thank you for joining us in this vital work.

Sincerely,
Vicki Seals
