Frequently asked questions
The term dementia is often misunderstood. Dementia itself is not a single disease—it’s an umbrella term describing a set of symptoms that affect memory, thinking, and behavior. These symptoms can be caused by a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, brain injuries, or other medical issues.
At Dementia Guardian, we focus on the impact of those symptoms, not the cause. Our mission is to promote safety, compassion, and understanding for every person living with dementia symptoms—regardless of the underlying diagnosis. Whether the cause is known or not, what matters most is protecting dignity, reducing risk, and ensuring that those affected are met with awareness and respect in every environment.
The universal symbol is a simple, easily recognizable sign displayed on products like door hangers, window decals, and vehicle tags. It serves as a discreet alert to caregivers, first responders, neighbors, and community members that someone with dementia is nearby and may need special consideration or assistance.
Our products are placed in strategic locations—such as at or on the front door, car surface or window, or on personal belongings of the caregiver —to inform and alert others quickly. This helps emergency personnel and the public respond appropriately and safely when interacting with a person living with dementia.
You can help by sharing information about Dementia Guardian in your community, encouraging local organizations and emergency services to learn about the symbol, and using our products to start conversations about dementia safety. Follow us on social media platforms for the latest information and shareable content.
Our products are designed for anyone living with dementia or caring for someone who does. The signs are designed to alert others that a person living with dementia is present in a home, vehicle or other location. Wearables - pins, tees, etc. - are worn by the CAREGIVER as a way to identify the person who is most familiar with the person living with dementia. Families, caregivers, healthcare providers, and community organizations can all benefit from using the universal symbol to improve safety for everyone.
Protecting the symbol ensures that it remains consistent and recognizable everywhere it is seen. This consistency is essential for the symbol to be effective in alerting others that a person living with dementia is present. Trademarks also safeguard the quality of our products and the safety of those who use them.
