The Moments That Started Dementia Guardian

Updated: Aug 8, 2025

Some ideas are born in boardrooms. Others are born in heartbreak. Dementia Guardian came from the latter.

I remember a day—ordinary in the calendar, but unforgettable in my heart—when my mother, who had Alzheimer’s Disease and I were out together. She was pleasant and kind, but constantly repeating her questions and comments to strangers.

What should have been a simple, pleasant outing quickly turned stressful. Mom became confused about where we were and what we were doing. Some strangers, not knowing what was happening, reacted with impatience and misunderstanding.

I found myself stepping in again and again to quietly explain,

“She has Alzheimer’s. She’s living with dementia.”

Those words felt heavy and deeply personal—yet they were the key to unlocking compassion in that moment. And it made me realize:

  • Caregivers shouldn’t have to tell the whole story to get understanding.

  • We need a way to communicate this instantly—without stigma—so people know to respond with patience and empathy.

That was the seed of Dementia Guardian.

From Seed to Symbol

From that day forward, the vision was clear: create a recognizable, respectful symbol that could be worn, displayed, or carried—something that instantly says, this person is living with dementia, please respond with kindness.

Not a medical label. Not something to inspire pity. But something to:

  • Protect dignity

  • Invite patience

  • Support caregivers silently in public situations

The Dementia Guardian symbol is meant to bridge the gap between strangers and understanding—between the often invisible world of dementia caregiving and the everyday world around us.

Why This Matters

Dementia doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed—it touches everyone who loves and cares for them. While there are ribbons for awareness and tags for medical alerts, there wasn’t a widely recognized dementia-specific sign that combined awareness, compassion, and safety.

Dementia Guardian was created to fill that gap.
