The Problem: Dementia Is More Than Memory Loss

When many people hear the word dementia, they immediately think of memory loss. While memory changes are common, dementia can also affect judgment, communication, reasoning, perception, and behavior. These changes often create situations that others misunderstand.

The Risk

When dementia goes unrecognized, a person may be viewed as uncooperative, confused, rude, suspicious, or intentionally difficult. Misunderstandings can increase stress for everyone involved and, in some situations, lead to unnecessary conflict or unsafe outcomes.

The Solution

Awareness changes how we respond. By learning to recognize the possibility of dementia, we become more patient, ask better questions, and approach situations with greater understanding.
